Go Home Productions Bootleg & Mash-Up History
From the CD mailouts to UK radio & press in early 2002, to the worldwide online distribution of MP3's and beyond.
The sounds, the artwork and the stories behind Go Home Productions.
A BIG work in progress...

May 2002
The birth of 'Go Home' and Eminem vs Wings "A Slim McShady"
Everything has to start somewhere.
'Go Home Productions' was actually conceived in a design studio above a 'travel products' warehouse in Mill Hill, London.
I was a Graphics Designer at the time, working in a four member design team and one slow afternoon we decided to "form a virtual
band" create a music track and see if we could get it played on national UK radio.

We needed a name. It had to have "Go" somewhere in the title because of the company we worked for.
"Go Fuck Yourself", "Go To Hell" and "Come And Have A Go" didn't really sit well with the broadcasting angle so we settled on
"Go Home" as that whas what most of us felt like doing at the time.

The music track was pretty much left to me. I'd been dabbling in Steinski / Coldcut type cut-ups for years on a Tascam Porta One
but with the aquisition of a home PC and a copy of ACID, life was made so much easier.
It was around this time that I was hearing a lot of Freelance Hellraiser / Soulwax (2 Many DJ's) / Curtis Rush / Girls On Top on XFM's
The Remix on Friday nights and discovering 'the bootleg' as in 2 songs spliced together.
After an 'acapella' hunt on Audio Galaxy, I started on doing something with Eminem's "Without Me".
.
After a weekend of trying everything from Led Zep to XTC
via Mansun, The Rolling Stones and all points inbetween,
I found that using Wings "Silly Love Songs" brought the
biggest laugh from those who heard it.
I guess the combo was so 'wrong' that it seemed to be
the perfect choice.
After playing it to the rest of the design team, they agreed
it was a blast and we should make some copies to throw the way of XFM / Kiss and Radio One.

Only 4 copies of this first Go Home "Slim McShady EP"
were made, for each team member.
Boomselection was the GO2 blog that was the web home of all things bootleg and along with XFM's The Remix, hosted by
Eddy Temple-Morris and James Hyman, and the Cartel Communiques "King Of The Boots" & "Bastard" clubnights, they
literally invented the bootleg scene in 2001. These were the guys who I needed to connect with.

In terms of Radio it was only XFM and Chris Moyles on Radio 1 that chanced their arm and played the stuff. In those days you
couldn't just forward an mp3 and expect it to get an airing. DJ's would only take notice of CD or vinyl, so I decided on 'pimping up'
the Go Home name by adding 'Productions', to give it that Boogie Down Productions or Big Apple Productions feel, then set
about burning some custom CD promos to mail out.
At the same time Boomselection was running an Eminem "Without Me" bootleg competition online, so the timing was pretty apt.

I wanted another mix to pair with 'Slim McShady' and decided to 'pay homage' to Freelance Hellraiser's Christina Aguilera vs The
Strokes track. Thankfully "Genie In A Bottle" sat OK with The Strokes "Someday", so I quickly assembled "Genies Revenge", created
new artwork for the promo CD and mailed it off to several DJ's at XFM / Radio One and KissFM.
I think there are 15 copies in existance.
.

At the same time as preparing the CD promos for radio, I also uploaded
an MP3 of "Slim McShady" to Audio Galaxy, which was pre-Napster or any
other file-sharing ideas. You could download and share tracks there, leave
comments etc and during the few days of creating the promos and mailing
them, the track seemed to be getting a fair bit of attention.

The CD's were dispatched with a cheeky press release (left) on the Monday,
so that The Remix guys would get them before their Friday show and much
to my enjoyment, they bit it and "Genies Revenge" got played that very night.
Hyman & Temple-Morris enthused over the artwork and the cheeky appeal
of the flipside, calling it a "summer blockbuster sequel".

A few days later Chris Moyles on the Radio One Breakfast Show played
"Slim McShady" which caused a bit of a buzz too.
Rating it 8.5 out of 10.

Boomselection by this time had put online an Eminem bootleg chart
called "With Or Without Me" and by the first weekend GHP was placed
at the number one position. They also featured "Genies Revenge" on
the website with a piece regarding the Remix airing.

Overseas "Slim McShady" seemed to be picking up all sorts of attention.
DJ Gary on George FM in New Zealand playlisted both tracks and
Audio Galaxy downloads doubled overnight. Loads of NZ national radio
continued for the whole of June 2002.

You can hear the XFM Remix and Radio One broadcasts here:

.

In the space of two weeks Go Home Productions had put it's name on the bootleg map I guess.
On a personal level it was quite satisfying. I'd had my first bit of national airplay in 10 years since the "Chicane" days and had
suddenly got the bug for getting back into the music business again, after being so disillusioned with everything in the mid 1990's.

Whilst the other members of the 'Go Home' design team marvelled at the ease with which a track could be snapped up and played
by the likes of Chris Moyles - I wanted to take it several stages further.
